2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class at the 2012 New York Auto Show

6a00d83451b3c669e20168e91b8622970c-800wi
For the 2013 model year, the Mercedes-Benz GLK compact luxury SUV gets a mild refresh that includes a restyled front end, a new dash and the addition of a diesel engine.

Starting with the biggest change, the GLK gets a 250 Bluetec trim for the model year. Mercedes says this four-cylinder diesel is the most powerful ever to reside in an SUV; the direct-injected 2.1-liter inline-four makes 190 horsepower and 369 pounds-feet of torque. The GLK250 Bluetec comes standard with permanent all-wheel drive.

The GLK350 uses the same 3.5-liter V-6 from three years ago, though now it produces 302 hp and 273 pounds-feet of torque (up from 268 hp and 258 pounds-feet of torque). The V-6 now comes with a stop/start system to improve gas mileage, and the trim is available with either rear- or all-wheel drive. Both engines are mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Up front, the headlights, front bumper, diffuser, grille and hood are restyled. The model now comes standard with LED daytime running lights and LED accent lighting lower in the bumper. The rear remains pretty much unchanged, though there's more chrome garnish and new LED lighting patterns in the taillights. New 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels come standard.

The cabin features a completely redesigned dashboard that looks more upscale than the former GLK's plastic-looking interior. The dash has a large burl walnut wood trim piece, redesigned radio and multimedia controls, and large chrome-ringed radial air vents. The transmission shifter has been moved from the center console to the steering-wheel column, a modern styling element seen on recent Mercedes vehicles. This frees up space for cupholders.

Newly available features include an automatic-self parking option and blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning systems. A drowsiness detection system is now standard.

The 2013 GLK350 goes on sale this summer, with the GLK250 Bluetec following in early 2013.

Mercedes-Benz Releases The Whole Enchilada On The 621 HP 2012 SL65 AMG

03-2013-mercedes-benz-sl65-amg
Arriving in U.S. dealerships in November, the new MY2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG V12 Roadster is making its world debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show. The AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine generates a peak output of 621 hp and a maximum torque of 738 lb-ft. The use of an all- aluminum body-in-white delivers a drastic weight reduction as the MY13 SL65 AMG is 254 pounds lighter than before. The distinctive front end is dominated by the new "twin-blade" grille with two blade-shaped fins and the lower horizontal bar in the front skirt in high-gloss chrome.

The SL65 AMG joins the SL550 roadster and the SL63 AMG roadster. The SL550 has a starting retail price of $106,375 and arrives in U.S. Mercedes-Benz dealerships in May. The SL63 AMG arrives in July.

"The combination of exclusive V12 dynamics and cultivated roadster pleasure was already unique in the previous model. We are certain that, with the new SL65 AMG, we have developed a stunning high-performance automobile beyond compare for a small, but loyal fan base," says Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

The intelligent lightweight design of the bodyshell also contributes to the reduction of fuel consumption. A key element in the improved fuel efficiency is the result of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-Speed transmission, the ECO stop/start function, and improvements to the internal efficiency of the engine and alternator management. Despite a considerable improvement in fuel economy, the peak output of the AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine is up from 604 hp to 621 hp. The maximum torque stands at a mighty 738 lb-ft.

This unparalleled output provides amazing propulsion for the new SL65 AMG – acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes 3.9 seconds. Top speed in the U.S. market stands at 186 mph. The key attributes of the AMG biturbo twelve-cylinder include its heart-stopping acceleration, and seamless power delivery combined with a distinctive AMG V12 soundtrack. In short, the SL65 AMG captures the imagination with its refined, stylish performance.

The AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine (M 279) is based on the previous M 275 unit and has been extensively developed for its application in the new SL65 AMG. New turbochargers with an enlarged spiral cross-section, new manifolds and wastegate channels optimized for airflow deliver an additional 17 hp. The multi-spark ignition with twelve twin ignition coils not only makes for smoother running, but also works together with a new, more powerful engine management and optimized cylinder heads to provide even more effective combustion. The outcome is fewer exhaust emissions, which is also in large part due to the optimized catalytic converter system.

The redeveloped AMG sport exhaust system incorporates a modified pipe layout for improved flow coupled with a weight reduction of seven pounds resulting from reduced wall thicknesses.

And it is not just the inner attributes of the AMG 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine that are stunning – the engine also looks inspiring. The carbon-fiber and aluminum engine cover further underscores the exceptional nature of the powerful twelve- cylinder that lies beneath.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-Speed transmission

For the first time, AMG is combining the 6.0-liter V12 biturbo engine with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-Speed transmission. The wide ratio spread of the seven- speed automatic transmission delivers significantly lower revving and helps in the reduction of fuel consumption. A new fuel-economy torque converter, reduced- friction bearings and transmission oil thermal management further increase the efficiency of transferring power to the wheels.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7-Speed transmission features four individual drive programs that can be selected at the touch of a button on the center console – Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S), Sport plus (S+) and Manual (M). The ECO stop/start function is always active in C mode. For the greatest sense of involvement and dynamics, there is the automatic double-declutch function for downshifting, as well as brief and precisely defined retardation of ignition and injection during upshifting under full load. The latter also reduces shift times.

Intelligent lightweight design featuring all-aluminum body-in-white and carbon

Compared to the steel construction of the previous model, the all-aluminum body-in- white of the new SL65 AMG delivers weight savings, as well as superior stiffness, safety and comfort. Intelligent lightweight design also means optimizing components for their specific application. For instance, an array of different aluminum processes come into play - components are made using gravity die casting or vacuum pressure casting, worked into extruded profile or used as aluminum sheet with varying wall thicknesses. The results are a high degree of stiffness and safety and improved vibration characteristics. Engineers made use of the even lighter magnesium for part of the cover behind the fuel tank. High-strength steel tubes are integrated into the A- pillars for reasons of safety.

Further weight reduction comes courtesy of the rear decklid. The internal frame is made from carbon composite material. The plastic exterior shell is then fastened to the extremely stiff carbon component with adhesive. The result is a weight saving of eleven pounds compared with a conventional rear lid. The innovative solution is being used initially in AMG's SL models. The outcome of the many lightweight design innovations is that the curb weight of 4,299 pounds for the new SL65 AMG is 254 pounds less than that of the previous model.

No! Sleep! Till L.A.!: Mercedes-Benz to reveal CLC with Beastie Boys' Mike D

Benz-clc-concept
Want to be among the first to see Mercedes-Benz's Concept Style Coupe? Then you gotta fight! For your right!

Mercedes will make the world debut of the stylish concept based on the new A-class not at a formal auto show with serious German executives wearing dull gray suits and intoning about market share and engineering excellence, but rather at a "multidisciplinary festival" in April in Los Angeles called "Transmission LA: Audio Visual Club curated by Mike D." Yes, that's the same Mike D who is front man for the seminal hip-hop act the Beastie Boys.

Let us explain. Transmission LA is a 17-day festival of art, music, film and food that will take place at the Geffen Contemporary at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. This is the second such festival, after one in Berlin last year curated by fashion designer Raf Simons. But the L.A. fest will be the first one to feature the world debut of a car. Mercedes helped sponsor the gig, so it got to include something of its own among the artwork. But rather than a GLK or the S, it went with something that should be appropriately hip. Or hip hop. We'll see.

As curator, Mike D will figure out where and how the Concept Style Coupe will be presented, but definitely look for it to be surrounded by "art."

Mike D of the Beastie Boys will curate the event in Los Angeles. MARK VAUGHN
Mike D of the Beastie Boys will curate the event in Los Angeles.

We asked Mike D if he, as a successful recording artist, had a garage full of cool cars. We figured a Lamborghini or a Bentley was pretty much required of any member of the hip-hop nation worth his or her bling.

"Well, I live in New York," was all he said to that question. Just as nobody walks in L.A., nobody drives in New York.

The L.A. event will be less like an art exhibit and more like a place you can hang out.

"When I was first approached about doing this, I thought I wanted to do not only visual art but also music, DJs, food, the complete sensory experience," Mike D said.

The food will include some by Kogi Korean BBQ food truck chef Roy Choi, whose spicy tacos we first tasted when he was serving them out of the back of a converted Scion xB at another car-related art happening in L.A.

"We'll be there every day cooking something new," said Choi.

With Mercedes taking part in the event, Choi said he might even work some knockwurst into his tacos and try a kimchee effect on some sauerkraut. We haven't been disappointed yet.

As you might guess, Mercedes is hoping to use this setting to draw a slightly different audience for this car.

"SERVICE department review --- I went to Fort Wayne on a business trip, When I was about to head back, I started to hear a squeeking/grinding sound. I had about 160 miles to drive back home, so wanted to get it checked. It was about 4:50 pm. Kurt Knight who is the service advisor picked up the call, and from then on I had the most pleasant trip to a car service, leave alone Mercedes service. Kurt and Mike, who was the technician about to leave, stayed late and put a new water pump on my car. Kurt showed me all the defective parts and explained why they need to be replaced. My car was all set, washed and fixed by around 6:45 pm. If I was living in Fort Wayne, I would take my car there for service all the time. Thank you Kurt and Mike for your excellent service."-Randy

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Set to Debut at 2012 NYC Auto Show

2013-mercedes-benz-sl63-amg_100383019_l
The era of 12-cylinder cars at Mercedes-Benz and its performance partner AMG looks far from over, with news coming out today that a new SL65 AMG complete with a twin-turbocharged V-12 engine is set for debut next month at the 2012 New York Auto Show.

Fears that the car may have been phased out for good arose when Mercedes-Benz quietly dropped the SL65 AMG model from the previous SL lineup last July, though continued to sell its V-8-powered SL63.

However, Car and Driver is reporting that a new SL65 AMG based on the sixth-generation ‘R231’ SL Class is planned and will join its more modest siblings in showrooms later this year.

No mention of what engine will power the new SL65 AMG but we would expect something more than the last-generation’s 604 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. A brand new engine is unlikely given the limited volume of V-12 models sold today, though applications in other models including the new S Class may justify the expense somewhat.

Another possibility is an updated version of the current model’s twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12, which develops up to 621 horsepower in other applications such as the most recent versions of the S65 and CL65 models from AMG.

On issue is the fact that a more powerful SL65 AMG will start encroaching on SLS AMG Roadster territory. With pricing kicking in at over $200,000, Mercedes would be stuck with two offerings in what is already a limited segment.

Expect styling to be similar to the latest SL63 AMG pictured above.

Mercedes SLS Trades Classic Gullwing for $200,000 Top-Down Roar

2010-mercedes-sls-amg
Highway 101 just south of San Francisco, and the orderly lines of traffic are holding a steady 65 miles per hour (105 kilometer per hour), placid and in no apparent hurry. California calm.

The roof is down on your $224,000 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster and the feral burble of the V-8 engine is even louder than the sharp snap of wind in your face.

That hunk of rumbling metal, with its furious pistons and hot oil, seems to be talking directly to you, a voice that smokes unfiltered cigarettes and gargles whisky.

Let me loose. Free me.

A California highway patrolman on a motorcycle idling on the inside shoulder reminds you why letting the SLS Roadster loose is not a good idea. Yet, it's impossible to shut out its persuasive urgings.

As a reincarnation of the famed Mercedes SL Gullwings of the 1950s, the convertible SLS supercar is a quintessential West Coast ride. The original coupes and roadsters are pricy collectors' items today, defined by clean lines and (in the coupe's case), exotic pop-up doors. You'll rarely see a more beautiful car.

Mercedes introduced the $190,000 SLS AMG coupe in 2009. It was a spiritual successor, with a 6.3-liter, 563-horsepower engine in its belly and a set of top-hinged gullwing doors. Less pretty, far faster.

The 2012 convertible model was recently released and it starts just south of $200,000. The roof is canvas and since the doors can't hang off of it, the car loses the gullwings. That might seem as if you've just negated the whole point, but the SLS makes the transition to a convertible surpassingly well.

Wide Body

The body is extremely low and wide, as if a titan had squished it down with a massive thumb. These distorted proportions appear even more exaggerated without a top. Same supercar, fewer inhibitions.

Lower the roof electronically in just over 10 seconds, trigger the engine, and the next part of the equation becomes clear. There's no sound insulation between you and the engine.

No surprise, it's best when your foot pins the accelerator mercilessly to the floor. Which might remind you that, like the coupe, the convertible is rated to travel at up to 197 mph.

Too bad there's no road in California where one might do such a thing legally.

Rising Tide

Even around stoplights, the power of the SLS is irrepressible, like being in the belly of a slow-moving wave way out to sea. It looks placid enough, but there's a deep reservoir of power. The SLS surges through its lower gears, eddying through third and fourth -- but you can cause it to tsunami at a pedal push.

The transmission is only available as a seven-speed double clutch; you can leave it in automatic or click through gears using the steering-wheel paddles. The interior on this particular car is a mix of bright red leather, nice stuff, and carbon-fiber (a $9,000 option). Racy and rich.

Off the highway, for the sake of both a change of scenery and safety of keeping your driver's license, you might head over the hills toward the Pacific, randomly choosing back roads. Even on narrow lanes the ride is firm and dependable, with predictable turns and good steering.

Low Nose

The car's width is a liability on some lanes, especially a very narrow road that runs along a wooded mountain ridge, passing through Christmas-tree farms lightly shrouded in mist. If you meet another vehicle coming the other way, it will be tough to find a place pull off into the rocky shoulder, especially with the low nose.

(A hotel valet in Monterey can attest to this after returning the roadster with the bottom of the front fascia chewed up and a fresh scrape on the paint.)

It's chilly in the higher elevation, but rather than put the top up, you turn on the seat warmers and Mercedes's clever system that blows warm hair directly onto the nape of your neck from the seatback.

What's a California car without a dash along Highway 1? It can seem like the world's most overrated road until you're actually swinging through the curves, and you recall why it's so beautiful and fun. With the top down, you really get a sense of the crashing waves below you, and the salt in the air.

But then the sun goes away and a few wet dots appear on the windshield. Rain. You could stop and put the roof up. Instead you add in throttle and the car happily responds, going ever faster. The cabin remains dry.

Who says you can't outrun the rain? It might be the best excuse you have for letting the SLS Roadster run free.
