First 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG In U.S. Up For Auction

2013-mercedes-benz-sl63-amg-spy-shots_100369411_m

At the 6th annual Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance taking place in Florida on February 25, a number of high profile cars, both new and old, will go under the hammer at the event’s live auction.

One of the cars that will be up for grabs is the yet to be announced 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG, the high-performance variant of the recently revealed 2013 SL Class.

It won’t just be any old SL63 AMG, however, as the particular car will be the first example delivered to a U.S. customer.

The new SL63 AMG will closely resemble the SL Class convertible on which it is based. However, it will be fitted with an aggressively-styled bodykit as well as a host of other performance upgrades including a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 delivering an estimated 571 horsepower.

Our previous reports feature more spy shots of the car as well as a spy video.

This isn’t the first time that special vehicles have been auctioned off at the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance. Last year we saw the first Ferrari FF and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster in the country go under the hammer, and the year before that it was the first Audi R8 V10.

This year, in addition to the first 2013 SL63 AMG, there will be a host of Shelby models sold as well as an Audi R8 GT Spyder and a Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4.

New Mercedes pumps the bass

456569-merc

MERCEDES goes loud and light with all-new SL.

The baby boomers are set to thump the "doof-doof" generation. The all-new Mercedes-Benz SL features two massive bass speakers mounted into the aluminium chassis in the front footwell for maximum bass output.

Benz boss Dieter Zetsche describes the sports car as "a concert hall on wheels".

With up to 12 speakers and an optional 900-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system, it should blow the opposition away.

The SL will arrive in Australia before the end of the year and, according to local Mercedes spokesman David McCarthy, there will be "little or no change" in price. The current model ranges from $242,780 to $519,250.

McCarthy says Australia will get a full four-vehicle range, V6 and V8, plus AMG V8 and V12.

The oldest car in the Mercedes-Benz family is the first mass-production model to feature a chassis and body made almost entirely of aluminium.

At 140kg less than the previous model, it lives up to the SL nameplate, which stands for "super lightweight" and began in the 1950s with a tubular steel frame. The folding hardtop roof is 15kg lighter and made mainly of magnesium. The only steel is in strategic positions such as around the windscreen for crash protection.

The chassis is also 20 per cent stiffer, making the SL more agile. The sports car has not yet been crash-tested but SL boss Uwe Erntsberger believes it will earn a maximum five stars.

The aluminium structure technology will find its way into other Benz models, he says, starting with the 2014 E-Class, which will be about 200kg lighter.

The frame has not been engineered for electric powertrains although "hybrid is possible but not yet tested".

The weight saving shows up in better fuel economy, lower emissions and claimed improved agility. Fuel economy is further improved by a stop-start function and an optimised seven-speed transmission.

The new V8 displaces 80cc less at 4663cc but the bi-turbo has 12 per cent more power (320kW) and 32 per cent more torque (699Nm). Zetsche claims the V8 has the power of a V12 but the economy of a V6. He says the SL will continue the model's 60-year tradition of being a benchmark for the brand.

The new SL is also a tour de force of technology. It has a system that detects driver weariness, an optional "Magic Sky" glass roof that turns from clear to opaque at the touch of a button and automatic boot opening and closing with the wave of a hand.

Mercedes-Benz Picks Up the iF Product Design Award 2012 for Four Models

Mercedes-Benz Picks Up the iF Product Design Award 2012 for Four Models

The designers at Mercedes-Benz have picked up yet another prize for no fewer than four models in the form of the internationally renowned “iF product design award 2012″. A top-class specialist jury has bestowed the award on the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, the SLK, the SLS AMG Roadster, and the Concept A-CLASS show car, as well as the smart electric mobility concept, all for their outstanding designs.

First presented in 1953, the “iF product design award” ranks among the world’s most important design awards and represents the seal of approval for good design. For 2012 the 24-member jury was again faced with the task of choosing its favourites, this time from more than 2000 candidates. Four models from Mercedes-Benz stood out in particular: the M-Class, the SLK, the SLS AMG Roadster and the Concept A-CLASS show car.

The M-Class won thanks to its characteristically distinctive SUV design and its variable interior with high wellness factor. The open-top SLS AMG Roadster, meanwhile, owes its victory to its exciting lines, which are reminiscent of the legendary 300 SL from the 1950s. The SLK Roadster also dominated the competition with its powerful sports car design, which portrays its outstanding qualities to brilliant visual effect – stylish comfort, light-footed sportiness and exemplary ecology.

With the Mercedes-Benz Concept A-CLASS, the jury acknowledged the birth of a new vehicle generation which provides a glimpse of the expressive design of the future A-Class.

As an overall concept, the trend-setting developments achieved by the automotive brand smart in the field of electric mobility also received the coveted “iF product design award 2012″. For its innovative e-mobility concept, smart created one-off vehicles such as the open-top smart forspeed, the smart e-scooter and also the smart e-bike, which is to be incorporated into the smart product line this year.

Mercedes-Benz USA Ranks #12 on FORTUNE's '100 Best Companies to Work For'

Third Consecutive Year On List - MBUSA Jumps from #15 to #12

MONTVALE, N.J., Jan. 19, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) announced today that for the third consecutive year, it has been ranked one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" by FORTUNE magazine in its 15th annual survey which appears in the February 12th issue of FORTUNE, available on newsstands on Monday, January 23rd, and now at fortune.com/bestcompanies. In its third year as an entrant, MBUSA's 2012 ranking of No. 12, (up from) No. 15 last year, is the sole automaker on the list and No. 4 among small organizations with less than 2,500 associates.

"In 2011 we celebrated several milestones not the least of which was the sales momentum of all three brands - Mercedes-Benz, Sprinter and smart -- which led us to our highest year on record and set the stage for us to take MBUSA to new places in the years ahead," stated Steve Cannon, President and CEO, MBUSA. "But what's particularly gratifying is to know that - whatever the circumstances, whether challenge or opportunity - the team here at MBUSA feels that this is one of the best places to work, not only in the industry but across the entire U.S."

To pick the 100 Best Companies to Work For, FORTUNE partners with the Great Place to Work Institute to conduct the most extensive employee survey in corporate America; 280 firms participated in this year's survey. More than 246,000 employees at those companies responded to a survey created by the institute, a global research and consulting firm operating in 45 countries around the world. Two-thirds of a company's score is based on the results of the institute's Trust Index survey, which is sent to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks questions related to their attitudes about management's credibility, job satisfaction, and camaraderie. The other third is based on responses to the institute's Culture Audit, which includes detailed questions about pay and benefit programs and a series of open-ended questions about hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs, and diversity efforts. After evaluations are completed, if news about a company comes to light that may significantly damage employees' faith in management, we may exclude it from the list. Any company that is at least five years old and has more than 1,000 U.S. employees is eligible. For information on how to apply, visit www.greatplacetowork.com

We Hear: Mercedes-Benz Will Make a GLK Diesel for the U.S.

2011-mercedes-benz-glk-front-three-quarter2-623x389

Diesel engines and German sport-utility vehicles might go together like Root Beer and vanilla ice cream for some, but there are still quite a few of them that don’t offer oil-burners underhood. Make that one less: Mercedes will reportedly sell a diesel GLK in the States by the end of the year.

That engine will be different from the one currently doing duty in American Mercedes-Benz diesels, which is a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 diesel. The new one is reportedly a four-cylinder model; although there’s no confirmation of exactly how much power it will produce, the new E300 Bluetec Hybrid sedan does have a 2.2-liter turbodiesel I-4 making 204 horsepower under the hood. Keep in mind, however, that the E300 isn’t destined for the States, so it’s still anyone’s call.

This would be the smallest overall offering to wear the three-pointed star and burn diesel fuel. The GL and ML SUVs have seen some success with Bluetec diesel variants–it’s been reported that nearly 30 percent of GLs are GL350 Bluetecs–and Mercedes also offers the engine in the R, S, and E-Class models.

The diesel GLK–which will also benefit from a mid-cycle refresh–will make its way to dealers sometime this fall, which looks like it should fend off competition from Audi, which is reportedly working on a diesel Q5. At current, BMW hasn’t announced any plans to make a diesel X3 for the U.S., only that it “wouldn’t rule it out.” Considering that a third of X5s sold are oil burners and the GLK’s diesel variant is predicted to push sales dramatically up (from roughly 24,000 this year to 30,000 next year), it might not be such a bad idea.

The dash of luxury: Hands on with Mercedes’ new Mbrace 2 in-car connectivity

Img_0085_625
Mercedes' new Mbrace 2 in-dash system brings a host of updates, including features like navigating directly to your friends using a simple text message, access to Google Street View, and more.

Mercedes may be better known for timeless styling, brawny engines and leather-appointed interiors than cutting edge in-dash technology within its cars, but don’t declare victory just yet, Ford: The Germans are not asleep at the wheel. On Monday, the auto manufacturer unveiled Mbrace 2 at CES 2012, the next generation of its in-car navigation and entertainment system. We had a chance to go hands on with the system before it makes its way into wood-paneled dashes across the globe, and while it won’t put Mercedes at the cutting edge of in-dash technology, it adds a number of crucial improvements to the original Mbrace.

The most significant of those crucial improvements is the addition of apps, of which there will be seven at launch, including Facebook, Yelp, and an open browser. The integrated iPhone app also returns, with some new features like the ability to chirp the horn and flash the lights from its faux keypad (apparently a highly requested feature from absent-minded owners who need a little help finding their Benzes in the Crate & Barrel parking lot).

mercedes mbrace 2 control unitMbrace 2 apps are filed away in a fairly standard carousel configuration, which you can roll through quickly with a control knob. Yes, a knob. Unlike touch-happy competitors like Cadillac’s Cue and MyFord Touch, Mbrace still relies on an old-school knob you can use to quickly flick through options, then press the center to select. Mercedes seems to have rationalized keeping this rather anachronistic system because previous owners are already familiar with it, but we still can’t see the harm with adding touch as a secondary – and very intuitive – way to interact with the system.

Although Mbrace 2 uses a fairly high resolution screen, the yellow-themed interface is conservative, bordering on dated, and moves around with the sluggishness you would expect from a 399MHz ARM processor. That much is excusable, but text input via a dial is not something even the most diehard Mercedes fan will likely relish. Fortunately, the accompanying smartphone app saves some of the trouble by allowing you to input addresses via the phone then zip them off to the car.

Interface aside, there are actually some cool features buried here. A “digital journal” can log your driving automatically and spit back stats on average speed, distance, and other tidbits. After selecting a destination, you can jump into Google Street View – an easier way to see where you’re headed than envisioning it from a map. With the Drive2Friend feature of the smartphone app, you can plug in a friend’s telephone number to send them a text, which, if they reply to with a “Y,” will send their GPS coordinates to your car and spool up directions automatically. Impressive.

The Mbrace 2 has CMDA 3G access built right in, so the system has been designed for seamless over-the-air updates. In the future, Mercedes told us, these could unlock a number of cool features. For example, since Mbrace 2 can actually communicate with other systems in the car, like the engine computer, Mercedes could release an update with improved engine timing to get better gas mileage. Or tell you when you need to change your oil. Or patch a software glitch that would otherwise require a visit to a dealership.

The 2013 Mercedes SL class will be the first to offer Mbrace 2 when it comes out in April, but all future 2013 vehicles will offer it standard.

Mercedes E400 Hybrid is Built for America: 2012 Detroit Auto Show

Mercedes-e400-hybrid-06

Building on the foundation of the S400 Hybrid, Mercedes-Benz chose this year’s North American International Auto Show as the place to unveil its (slightly) smaller E-Class derrivative.

Although Mercedes also plans to offer an E300 Hybrid that combines a 27 hp electric motor and battery back with a 2.0 liter four-cylinder diesel engine that develops 201 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque; that car is targeted primarily at Europe. In the US, which shows a preference for gas/electric hybrids, a direct injected V6 will be teamed with the electric motor system instead, resulting in the E400 Hybrid.

Rated at 302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, in terms of fuel economy, Mercedes says the E400 Hybrid should deliver approximately 24 miles per gallon in city driving and 31 mpg on the open road.

According to Dr. Thomas Weber, who heads up Daimler AG’s passenger car development and research programs, the two E-Class Hybrids aim “to offer precisely the models which our customers want,” while providing “a clear reduction in fuel consumption as well as a very impressive driving experience.”

The E400 Hybrid is scheduled to arrive in US dealers during the second quarter of 2012, with deliveries expected to follow in other markets, notably China and Japan.

Mercedes to Unveil Zero-Emission Car for Two

2012-01-03_1427
Mercedes will reveal its new zero-emission, electric drive vehicle at the upcoming North American International Auto Show in Detroit this month. The smart for-us two seater is being referred to as a “tongue-in-cheek” translation of a pickup for 21st century urban life.

Designed to accommodate two people along with their two bicycles, or smart e-bikes, the cargo area features a docking station for storing or charging. Additionally, parent company Daimler will reveal its new two-wheel bicycle with electric power assistance early this year, serving as a perfect complement.

The smart for-us reaches a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour (about 75 mph) and comes with some advanced features, including a smartphone with integrated video camera on top of the instrument panel support versus traditional interior rear-view mirrors.
