Mercedes Revealed Its Concept Infotainment System, @yourCommand

At the Mercedes-Benz TecDay 2011 event in Germany, Mercedes revealed its concept infotainment system, @yourCommand, a voice- and gesture-controlled cloud-based system in the F 125 research vehicle. While that system is a few years away from being integrated into production vehicles, Mercedes also announced that in a few months it will begin selling a new infotainment option developed specifically for the iPhone.

Mercedes didn't provide much detail about the future infotainment system except to say that it will leverage the iPhone's processing power "to create a revolutionary user interface with fluent transitions and animation." The car maker also said that various iPhone information and functionality will be displayed on the in-dash display, and will be accessed using the COMAND controller.

Earlier this year Mercedes released a video of the A-Class concept's infotainment system, which appears to be designed around the iPhone. The concept system accesses social media and entertainment applications, and the graphics of the system are a lot more, um, flamboyant than the restrained COMAND Online system. Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche is slated to deliver a keynote address at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show, which would be an obvious place and time to reveal a new iPhone-centric infotainment system.

While Mercedes appears to be doubling down on the iPhone infotainment option, other platforms aren't being entirely ignored. The car maker also announced that in 2013 it will implement MirrorLink to support the seamless integration of Nokia, HTC, and Samsung smartphones with COMAND. For the moment, smartphone integration is limited to the Media Interface Plus (MIP) and Mbrace iPhone application. Mercedes will also introduce Near Field Communications smartphone pairing in COMAND in 2013.

Four Mercedes-Benz Vehicles Hailed as the Most Beautiful Cars of 2011

After nearly 23,000 readers voted in the 2011 Autonis design award, four Mercedes-Benz vehicles got an award, which means that these cars are visually appealing.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class won the medium-size category, getting more than 2/3 of votes. In the luxury category, the CLS four-door coupe placed first, surely because of its excellent design and sportiness. On the other hand, the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster got the thumbs up from readers, this is in the cabriolets type of car. Lastly, the legendary 300 SL, which still attracts this generation despite the design being 60 years now, got the “design icon of recent decades.”

The Autonis design award is based on reports on surveys done by “auto motor und sport” and it has become the “beauty contest” of cars.

Will the changes to the new Mercedes M-Class Be Enough to Make it the 2012 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year?

Mercedes-Benz remains at the top of the automotive industry, known for prestigious cars and SUVs with technology you may not find anywhere else.

Changes to the all-new third generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class are evolutionary, with crisper styling and more standard features than ever before. That means a more upright familial nose, a wood-and-leather-trimmed interior, and technology that can detect when the driver becomes drowsy. While no staffers were blown away by the conservative styling cues, many were impressed by the ML’s interior packaging, which offered plenty of seating room front and rear for even our taller staffers, as well as one of the more spacious cargo areas with minimal wheelwell intrusion.

Mercedes-benz-m-class-623x389
We were also impressed with the two new V-6 engines in the new M-Class lineup: a 302-horsepower, 3.5-liter gasoline mill, and a 3.0-liter diesel that packs 240 horses. While the gasoline engine was eager to rev, virtually all testers preferred the silky smooth, 455-lb-ft diesel engine despite a 4100-rpm redline and a bit of diesel clatter.

We were impressed with the ML350’s on-road handling given its larger size and weight, especially with the optional active anti-roll bars. If there was a common complaint on the Merc’s road manners, it was that the suspension tune was too firm. Nevertheless, we were generally impressed with the Mercedes’ road manners and versatile nature, especially as a vehicle to eat up the highway miles.

Will the changes to the new Mercedes M-Class be enough to make it the 2012 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year? Find out on October 25th.

Smaller Mercedes-Benz SLS Sibling Confirmed

Christoph Jung, development director of performance division AMG revealed that Mercedes-Benz is planning a smaller, less expensive sibling to the Mercedes SLS supercar. According to Jung, “There is room for an AMG model below the SLS, targeting the Porsche 911. This is the next market for AMG, and we are considering what is the right package. It is important to work on our brand and grow it."

Although this new sports car is only in the early stages, Jung did reveal a few details to AutoExpress. To keep it from becoming to heavy, it will have only two seats and as stated by Jung, “It has to be a V8. We have heritage and customers expect it.”

Car_photo_468610_25-635x423
According to AutoExpress, the egnine will “most likely a development of the firm’s latest 5.5-litre twin-turbo, this engine would produce up to 500bhp, driving the rear wheels through a seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox. Expect 0-60mph in four seconds and a top speed of 185mph. “We have to have performance figures close to competitors, but we need much more,” Jung told us. “We need it to sound right and go right. It can’t just be the most powerful. It has to have the whole package.”

The new model is also likely to be highly efficient, boasting stop-start and other efficiency-boosting measures.

A coupe is a certainty, and a roadster could join it. “When you are new to a market, you can only offer one or two variants. You can’t expect to do more than that from the start.”

The Mercedes-Benz unveiled the F 125!

Why the bold statement? Two reasons. First, the 125 acknowledges the 125th anniversary of the automobile being invented by Karl Benz. Second, the F 125! has a range of 1000 kilometers (621.4 miles), emissions-free! If you’ve been following alternative fuel trends or Mercedes’ engineering activity, you may have guessed the company’s fuel-cell technology (F-Cell) is at work.

Using hydrogen for its energy source, the environmentally friendly technology is already proven in a B-Class F-Cell that successfully circumnavigated the world—driving 30,000 kilometers through 14 countries and four continents. A Mercedes representative was overheard stating that the F 125! will cover 950 kilometers (590.3 miles) on a full tank of hydrogen alone.

Supplementing the F-Cell is Mercedes’ plug-in hybrid system. The use of a hybrid system enables the concept car to capitalize on range-increasing technologies such as brake regeneration and engine start-stop that couldn’t be used otherwise. With the new lithium-sulfur battery, as opposed to a conventional lithium-ion battery, there’s higher energy density, although power density is about the same. The result is a prototype battery that delivers extended range, or in this case, an extra 50 km (31.1 miles). Adding that to the F-Cell’s 950-km figure gives the F 125! its magical 1000-km range.

As for performance, four electric motors comprise the all-wheel drive e4MATIC system. In total, the F 125! produces 231 continuous horsepower, with a peak output of 313 hp. Mercedes claims the F-Cell plug-in hybrid will accelerate from 0-100 km (0-62 mph)in 4.9 seconds and carry a top speed of 136.7 mph.

Despite its gullwing door configuration, the F 125! has full rear seating and is intended to accommodate four passengers.Mercedes even goes so far as to call it a saloon. The hydrogen tanks are structurally integrated into the floor assembly—instead of clumsy tanks—improving interior space. To compensate for the missing B-pillars, high-strength steel, aluminum and carbon fiber are used to construct a rigid chassis that is also light. The doors use lightweight CFRP and can be opened and closed by hand gestures—a neat, conceptual technology that can also be found in the networked infotainment system with multiple displays (including an autostereoscopic 3D display for the driver).

While only a concept at the moment, the Mercedes-Benz F 125! is a testament to the company’s commitment to F-Cell. Considering it’s a saloon, this might be a taste of what a future S-Class might be.
