Spied! Mercedes-Benz Testing V-12 Powered G65 AMG?

That mysterious pair of Mercedes-Benz G-Class mules has once again been spotted by our spy photographer, this time running winter tests in Sweden. The facelifted G-Wagens don’t look that different from when we last saw them in October, but our spy shooter now believes one of them to be the rumored V-12-powered G65 AMG.

The test mules retain the classic, utilitarian shape of the G-Class, and still sport the updated grille, new side mirrors, and revised front bumper that we saw last time around. The dual side-exit exhaust pipes are also present, placed in their usual spot right in front of the rear wheel wells. One interesting difference about these mules, however, is the appearance of openings in the front bumper, which our spy photographer believes hide turbocharger intercoolers. One test mule sports a single intake vent on the passenger side of the front bumper, while its otherwise identical testing partner sports two. Our spy photographer speculates that the one with the single opening is packing Mercedes’ 5.4-liter twin-turbo V-8, estimated to make around 525 hp in the G55 AMG. The other one could be hiding the S65 AMG’s twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 under its hood, good for around 612 hp. If MB’s current naming scheme sticks, that would make this SUV a G65 AMG.

Further evidence that this one is the more powerful of the two can be seen in the brakes, which look upgraded for better stopping power. It’s believed that the V-12-powered G-Class will be a limited-run vehicle, with production numbers as low as 200 units at 250,000 euros (roughly $326,850) a pop. Mercedes-Benz won’t confirm the existence of either vehicle, though rumor has it that these hot boxes could debut as early as the Detroit show in January. Whatever beastly powerplants Mercedes has in store for these rugged machines, we’re glad to see the automaker hasn’t given up on its tried-and-true G-Wagen just yet.

Mercedes-Benz launches hybrid offensive

0ad609147a233917135a525fb17f8955
Mercedes-Benz is filling a gap in its model lineup with two models that the automaker says are the most economical luxury-class vehicles in the world. New to the E-Class offering are the E 300 and E 400 BlueTec HYBRIDs.
The E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID combines fuel economy with impressive performance.  Its4-cylinder diesel engine produces204 hp and 369 lb.-ft of torque.Combined with an electric motor producing 27 hp184 lb.-ft., this little power plant is capable of 231 hp and a stunning 553 lb.-ft. of torque.Better yet. Unofficial fuel consumption estimates are as high as 56 mpg using the European standard.  That translates to about 45 mpg here.
The V6 gasoline-fueled engine in the E 400 HYBRID produces 306 hp and 272 lb.-ft., and is also supplemented with 27hpand 184lb.ft.from the electric motor. The consumption figures based on the American CAFE standard are: City 24 mpg, Highway 31 mpg, Combined 27 mpg.
"With these two E-Class models we are now continuing our comprehensive hybrid offensive. The modular technology opens up a quick way for us to complement other model series with hybrid models", explains Professor Dr. Thomas Weber, Daimler Board Member for Group Research and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. "With a clear focus on the different requirements of global markets, we are able to offer precisely the models which our customers want. The E-Class hybrids provide a clear reduction in consumption as well as a very impressive driving experience: they represent hybrid motoring at the premium level."
Available as a sedan and wagon, the new models don‘t require passengers to compromise when it comes to space.
The driving experience includes an engine start/stop function to conserve fuel while standing still and regenerative braking to capture and store the energy that would normally be lost during braking.   Hard acceleration will benefit from the boost effect of the electric motor and the energy stored in the lithium ion battery.  Purely electric driving is also possible and Mercedes has hinted at a feature called “sailing function“.  Details are forthcoming.
The hybrid module is flexible, allowing its use in other model series, such as the S 400 HYBRID.  The new hybrid models will premiere at the Detroit Auto Show and will appear on the market during the 2012 calendar year. The E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID is initially planned to be launched on the European market, while the E 400 HYBRID will be made available on the American market first, followed by other countries such as Japan and China later.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Hybrids to Bow at 2012 Detroit Show

2011-mercedes-benz-e350-bluetec-badge-623x389

It appears that the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL may be sharing the spotlight at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.  According to a report by Autocar, Mercedes-Benz will introduce two new E-Class hybrids at the Detroit show. The E-Class is already one of the most varied models in the automakers portfolio with sedans, coupes, cabriolets, wagon, all-wheel drive, and high-performance variants available. These two new hybrids add to that list and will bring some eco-friendly cred to the E-Class.

The first hybrid is the E300 Bluetec, expected to go on sale in Europe next September. The E300 will include a 2.1-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder diesel rated at 201 hp and 369-lb feet of torque. Adding to that torque-tastic figure is an electric motor rated at 27 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. The E300 is expected to scoot from 0-62 mph in just 7.5 seconds with a top speed of 150 mph. Autocar also reports that it will emit 109g/km of CO2 emissions, 40g/km less than the gas-powered BMW Active5 Hybrid. According to our source at Mercedes-Benz USA, there are no plans to bring the E300 to the States for now, though that could change in the future.

Next up is the E400 Hybrid, which will be a U.S.-only car. The E400 will get the E300’s electric motor combined with the 3.5-liter, V-6 engine (302 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque) already used in other models. It’s estimated to achieve a combined 32.4 mpg on the U.S. fuel cycle. Both vehicles will feature a number of fuel-sipping tricks such as start/stop, a sailing mode, low resistance tires, and brake energy recuperation. Mercedes-Benz will reveal the detailed specs closer to the Detroit show.

Official Photos of the 2013 Mercedes SL Roadster

Germancarforum showed yet another leaked images of the 2013 R231 Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster and this time, these are high- definition photos. The brochure scans we showed you a few days ago was confirmed by this new ones, the car will indeed look like its predecessor, only lighter and of course, with a few upgrades.

The photos also showed the SL 350 which could be around 305hp and the SL 500 which may have 390hp. I say “may” because the car is scheduled to debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January, thus Mercedes-Benz have not confirmed specifications yet. The interior images though, showed a generous helping of leather and the other exterior details of the automobile.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL Photos Leaked

Photos of the redesigned 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL, apparently taken from a sales brochure and a magazine ad, were leaked by members of an online forum just two days ahead of the car's official release. The redesigned SL makes its world debut in early January at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.

The images appear to be authentic and portray a new design that draws inspiration both from historic SLs of the past and from the range-topping SLS AMG sports car.

Mercedes-Benz also has teased the new SL recently in a series of photos of disguised prototypes undergoing preproduction testing.

The automaker said the 2013 SL will get an all-new, lightweight aluminum body structure, plus two new high-tech systems, including the first application of its unique Magic Vision Control adaptive wiper/washer system, which channels water to the windshield just in front of the wiper blade, and FrontBass audio, which uses the free spaces in the aluminum structure ahead of the footwells as resonance chambers for the bass loudspeakers.

Mercedes-Benz To Promote AMG In F1

Safety-car
It was back in 1967 when the AMG badge first appeared on a Mercedes-Benz product, and in 2012 it will first appear on a Formula 1 car.

In order to promote its performance division, Mercedes-Benz has decided to change the name of its F1 team for the 2012 season, and it will now be called “Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team.”

On this occasion, the director of motorsport at Mercedes, Norbert Haug said: “Our new team name fuses the proud traditions of AMG and the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows at the pinnacle of motorsport. These three letters (AMG) are synonymous with high technology, sporting performance and excitement and this step is a further strong sign of the strategic commitment Mercedes-Benz has made to Formula 1.”

So if you are a fan of the Aufrecht Melcher Grobaspach (AMG) racing cars, wait until March 18, for the first Formula 1 race of 2012, which will be held in Melbourne, Australia, to see your favorite racing cars in action.

The Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG Wins A 12th Annual Auto Style Award!

eCityofStyle proudly presents the 12th annual Auto Style Awards, in which we pick the five most stylish autos for the current model year. Finalists are selected after several qualities are evaluated and compared, such as exterior and interior style, fun-to-drive factor, exclusivity, and the all-important head-turning quotient. Nothing sums up “auto style” more than the public’s reaction to seeing these cars in person.

If the base CLS isn't aggressive enough for you, the CLS63 AMG ought to satisfy your needs. The AMG package upgrades are worth every penny. Adding more rakish front fascia inspired by the exotic SLS, muscular fenders, and a meaner engine, the CLS63 AMG is a bona fide sports car.

Complementing the athletic exterior upgrades, the interior design is first-class all the way. Carbon-fiber and piano-black trims are available to go with upgraded sports seats, aluminum shift paddles, and an over-sized shift knob.

While the refined interior is well-suited for long trips, the CLS is engineered to be driven fast. Climb behind the steering wheel slightly flattened on top and bottom, and you will be quite happy to oblige.

Concept Car: Mercedes-Benz SILk

Concept-car-mercedes-benz-silk6
Transportation designer, Hyoungsoo Kim came up with a new project – Mercedes-Benz SILk. An electric car that is very futuristic yet, does not lose the design and lines Mercedes cars are known for.

According to the website, Tuvie.com, the car is not only aesthetically sound, the features are also packed with great stuff. For example. The three star logo at the front is equipped with HSS speaker. It also has sensors at the four corners of the body to detect pedestrians. If this would be a real car, this can help reduce accidents on the road, aside from the power it could produce. Judging from the looks and contour of the car, it could be a lean and mean vehicle.

The First All-Electric AMG : SLS AMG E-Cell

The in-house tuning division of Mercedes-Benz is now “cooking up” a new car. Well, actually just an improvement of what’s already in their line up, only now it is going to be all-electric. The SLS AMG E-Cell will be the first of its kind in AMG’s range of vehicles.

By the middle of next year, people can start ordering it, late next year to early 2013 test drives and deliveries are scheduled. Indeed, the production of the supercar is moving fast as confirmed by Ola Kallenius Mercedes-Benz AMG’s Chairman of the Board of Management. The company has not given the exact specifications and features of the car yet, except of course, it will be run by lithium-ion battery.

According to AutoBlog, they interviewed Kallenius about the plans of “electrifying” other Mercedes-Benz models, as it has been reported that the brand is planning it, and the three star brand boss said, “we must look at everything”. Well, if this push through, we can expect more environment-friendly cars on the road in the future.

Global Unveiling of ML63 AMG Sport Utility

PHOTO (select to view enlarged photo)
Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG

LOS ANGELES - November 15, 2011: The next-generation Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG sport utility vehicle is making its world premiere at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, open to the public November 18-27 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Three more high-performance Mercedes-Benz cars are making their North American debut at the L.A. Show – a long-awaited roadster version of the formidable SLS AMG gullwing coupe, the race-track-designed C63 AMG Coupe Black Series and the 415-hp SLK55 AMG featuring AMG Cylinder Management. Also during the Show, the L.A.-based Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy is gearing up for its freshman class of teenage drivers at its first training center in the U.S.

014546-mercedes-benz-to-unveil-new-ml63-amg-l-auto-show
ML63 AMG Sport Utility Combines Biturbo V8 with 4MATIC

On sale in the U.S. in February, the 2012 ML63 AMG (518hp, 516 lb-ft) adds V8 performance to the new-generation M-Class line launched earlier this year, combining formidable AMG power with the all-wheel-drive traction of the renowned Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC system. In addition, an optional AMG Performance Package is being offered for the first time on the M-Class.

Standard equipment on the new ML63 AMG includes a designo leather interior with a black headliner and Parktronic as well as the feature-packed Premium 1 and 2 option packages. The new ML63 AMG is available with an optional AMG Performance Package that consists of 32 more horsepower, 44 more lb-ft of torque, a higher speed limiter of 174 mph, an AMG Performance steering wheel, carbon fiber engine cover and red brake calipers.

PHOTO (select to view enlarged photo)
Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG

All ML63 AMG sport utilities are fitted with special AMG body work that includes deeper under-bumper aprons at the front and rear, more sculpted rocker panels under the doors and quad exhaust pipes. Inside, AMG sports seats are complemented by a leather-covered AMG steering wheel with sporty flattened bottom.

Joining the popular ML350 (302 hp, 273 lb.-ft.) and the thrifty ML350 BlueTEC diesel (240 horsepower, 455 lb.-ft. of torque), the ML63 AMG is powered by a direct-injection, biturbo V8 that produces 518 horsepower and 516 lb.-ft. of torque. Another V8-powered M-Class model, the ML550 (402 hp, 443 lb.-ft.), will also be available in early 2012.

C63 AMG Coupe Black Series
Among the exciting new cars making their North American debut at the L.A. Show, a Black Series version of the C63 AMG Coupe features a number of impressive refinements designed to make it the most powerful C-Class of all time. Thanks in large part to forged pistons, a modified engine control unit and lighter crankshaft and connected rods, its V8 now produces 510 horsepower, up from 451. Zero-to-60 mph acceleration takes 4.2 seconds. Larger engine air ducts in the deep AMG front apron are complemented by two air outlets in the aluminum front hood.

The Black Series suspension and brakes go well beyond the AMG components in the normal 2012 C63 AMG Coupe. For example, front wheel track has been increased, and the rear fenders are nearly two inches wider on each side to accommodate wider track as well as larger, staggered-width wheels and tires.

At the rear, a body-color rear lip spoiler sits at the edge of the trunk lid, and below the bumper is a new rear apron that incorporates an eye-catching rear air diffuser with a black grille at the top and two sets of twin exhaust pipes at the bottom. A subtle “Black Series” logo on the trunk lid identifies the limited-production coupe.

SLS AMG Roadster
Also making its North American debut in L.A. is the 2012 SLS AMG Roadster. With a retractable fabric top and conventionally hinged doors, the new convertible joins the highly successful SLS AMG gullwing coupe, the first-ever car designed and developed from the ground up by Mercedes-AMG, the company’s high-performance division.

The folding soft top on the new SLS AMG can be opened in only 11 seconds, even when the car is moving at speeds up to 31 mph, and a rear window of single-layer safety glass is seamlessly bonded into the top. With the roof closed or open, the roadster’s trunk capacity is virtually the same as the gullwing coupe.

The SLS AMG can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in only 3.7 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 197 mph. With 563 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque, the 6.3-liter V8 engine is one of the world’s most powerful naturally aspirated V8s in production. Among its many special features, dry-sump engine lubrication (rare in the auto industry) along with a front-mid engine located well behind the front wheels, coupled with a rear-mounted transaxle, all contribute to impressive vehicle handling.

All-New SLK55 AMG
The all-new SLK55 AMG is the first AMG model in a sports car line introduced earlier this year, and it’s also the first V8-powered car in the new SLK lineup. With a wide front grille inspired by the SLS AMG, a sweeping hood, relatively long doors and a short rear section, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK line represents the third generation of a sports car that rocked the automotive world when it unveiled the first automatic retractable hardtop in modern times.

AMG Cylinder Management
The 2012 SLK55 AMG is powered by a direct-injection 5.5-liter V8 that produces 415 horsepower and 398 lb.-ft. of torque for 0-60 mph acceleration of 4.5 seconds. The new V8 features an AMG Cylinder Management system that imperceptibly cuts off four cylinders during partial load, improving gas mileage considerably. Similar to a system used on 750-hp Formula 1 engines, all eight cylinders are activated smoothly whenever the driver needs more power.

Mercedes SLC (2015) - the R190 baby SLS revealed

The gestation process was slow and tricky, but we can now announce that Mercedes has at last signed off the SLC - a baby SLS supercar the AMG boys had up their sleeves for over two years.

The new Merc SLC is now due in 2015 when the SLS comes in for its final pit stop. The new, slightly smaller supercar will be available in coupe and roadster guise, and it is front-engined after an earlier brief dalliance with a mid-engined set-up.

So what powers the new Mercedes-Benz SLC?

This is one area where we were wrong. The SLC will not accommodate the expected new AMG-tuned twin-turbo V6, as CAR reported earlier, but the faithful V8 which is mated to the familiar dual-clutch transmission.

Mercedes_slc_image_2
It's still early days for this programme, but the Affalterbach grapevine suggests that instead of the big-bore 5.4- or 6.3-litre V8 units, project R190 (the official codename) will in fact feature a brand-new downsized 4.0-litre V8.

How come? Because after BMW and VW/Audi, MB is also about to switch to a new engine generation with a standardised 500cc-per-cylinder displacement. As a result, there will soon only be 2.0-litre fours, 3.0-litre sixes and 4.0-litre V8s. Heaven knows how they will be badged, though, Merc labels having long since lost much bearing on the actual capacity under bonnet.

The V12 and the old-school three-cylinder will eventually be phased out, and the all-new three for Smart and the A-class will be supplied by Renault-Nissan.

What is the new Mercedes SLC (2015) made out of?

Since R190 does after a brief overlap effectively replace the SLS, we can expect a similar aluminium-intensive engineering layout, a lighter kerb weight, even better handling qualities and exceptional performance.

The SLC puts an end to the dream of a mid-engined Mercedes sports car, but at the same time it fuels speculation about a complete range of emphatically dynamic two-seaters.

Merc's supercar plan

On one side of the SLC, we may thus eventually find a lightweight V6-engined spin-off of the next SLK. On the other side, we may find a carbonfibre supercar which could take the friendly rivalry with McLaren to the next stage.

Unfortunately none of these emotional newcomers can answer such truly urgent questions facing parent firm Daimler. Such as the future of Smart, how to plug the gap between Smart and the A-/B-class, and which alternatives to BMW i and Audi E-tron Mercedes should offer.
